Dimosthenis Panagiotakos is Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, School of Health Science and Education at Harokopio University (2005–present). He has served as Vice Rector of Harokopio University and Dean of the School of Health Sciences. In parallel, he has been Adjunct Professor in Medicine at the University of Canberra, Australia (2017–present), and serves as collaborating professor and Deputy Director of the MSc Program in Epidemiology at the Hellenic Open University.
Since 2016, he has been a full member of the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) of the European Commission, where he has actively contributed, presented, and chaired committees addressing major public health issues. He is also an Expert at the European Court of Auditors (2022–2027).
His research interests focus on the epidemiology of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, the development of stochastic models for disease prediction, as well as the investigation of disease etiology and the design of community-based prevention strategies. He has coordinated or participated in 27 funded research projects supported by European, national, and private bodies, with a total budget exceeding €15 million.
He has served as a regular member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) (2022–2025), a position he also held during previous terms (2009–2012 and 2012–2015). In 2019, he was appointed First Vice President and Board Member of the National Public Health Organization (EODY) (2019–2022), contributing to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also served as a member of the National Council of Public Health and the National Nutrition Policy Council of the Ministry of Health.
His scientific output is extensive, with more than 1,000 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and over 80,000 citations (h-index: 101), ranking him among the top 2% most highly cited scientists worldwide (2021–2025).
He is a founding member of the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society, where he has served as President, as well as a member of the Hellenic Statistical Institute, where he has served as Secretary General and Vice President. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, the Society for Risk Analysis, the International Biometric Society, and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology.
For his scientific work and overall contribution, he has received numerous awards and distinctions from Greek and international scientific organizations, as well as honorary recognitions from universities and local authorities. He remains an active citizen, with particular sensitivity to issues of health inequalities.
