Aquaculture Expert, FAO/GFCM Coordinator of Technical Advisory Group on ‘Governance and Responsible Investment in Aquaculture
An aquaculture and seafood industry professional with over 30 years of experience across both the private and public sectors, Filippos’ expertise spans strategic planning, governance, operations, and the national and international development of the aquaculture sector.
Throughout his career, he has led and contributed to numerous national and international projects in collaboration with key global organizations such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, FAO’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), and the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory Foundation (FOESA). He has also worked closely with major aquaculture production companies (Nireus, Kefalonia Fisheries) as well as producer organizations in Greece and abroad.
From 2002 to 2008, he served at the Hellenic Management Organisation Unit for Development Programmes (MOU S.A.), within the Managing Authority of the Operational Programme “Fisheries 2000–2006”. Between 2016 and 2019, he served as Technical Consultant to the Saudi Aquaculture Society (SAS), where he designed and managed Saudi Arabia’s first national aquaculture biosecurity program, promoted the adoption of international third party certification schemes, and developed the country’s National Code of Responsible Aquaculture Practices. He subsequently joined the National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program (NLFDP) of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, where he held senior leadership roles as Director of Aquaculture and later Vice President of Operations until February 2025.
In 2021, he was selected as a Global Expert in the “Sustainable Aquaculture 2030” Working Group of the Blue Food Partnership, an initiative of the World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action.
Filippos currently works as an independent consultant and Technical Advisor for Strategic Projects at Beacon Development (KBD), under the National Transformation Institute (NTI) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. In parallel, he is the Coordinator of the Technical Advisory Group on “Governance and Responsible Investment in Aquaculture” for FAO’s GFCM.
He holds a BSc in Marine Biology/Oceanography and an MSc in Aquaculture and Fisheries from the University of Wales (UK), as well as an MBA in General Management and Marketing from the University of Leicester (UK).
